We also made a stop at The
big temple in Nara. This is where there is a famous and huge
Buddha statue. The interesting part of this visit is that there
is a wooden column that has a hole in it the size of the nostril
of the Buddha statue there. It was considered good luck to crawl
through the hole, so of course most of us had to try. It was
quite a trick, too, as there was no room to fold up your arms.
They had to be either at your sides or straight out in front
of you. The length of the hole was longer than even our gaijin
bodies and was worn smooth with much use, so we had to kick and
wiggle and sometimes get a hand from the other end.
. . The Japanese tourists there got a kick
out of seeing us, with our relatively large bodies, try to wiggle
through.
